Adjusting!

Hi!

Just wanted to give you a quick update about how everyone is adjusting.

I think the middle 4 children are adjusting the quickest.

Sadie Grace started school today, but only lasted for about 2 hours. She cried a lot and just wanted to leave. She says she does not like it. It is new, and she is not in control and these are things that are hard for her. Dave and I just need wisdom about how to proceed. Knowing her personality, she may decide that she does not want to go all year. So, we need wisdom about whether or not to just allow her to stay home with me. Their are 2 little girls that live in the duplex across from us who are in her class. They were both out sick today and I am wondering if they had been there if she would have had a better day. David and Ella are doing well in their classes. Ella’s teacher is so sweet, just perfect for Ella! I think they will both have a lot of fun being at the Trust School.

Lydia seems homesick. She is still her cheerful self, but spends a lot of time trying to communicate with her friends at home. She is at an age where being a way from friends can be real hard. You can pray that she will adjust. She started her role as PE teacher today and the busier she stays, the happier she will be.

I am doing better each day. God just showed me so clearly (even though I knew this, sometimes I have to be reminded) that there is no way I can make it through this adventure on my own strength. The only way I will make it will be through God’s strength. The ministry opportunities in our little compound are huge. There are many children living in each of the 4 homes, and our children have already spent hours getting to know them through simple games that they play outside. One of the mothers, Brenda, came over to see me last night. Today I also met the caretakers wife, Maggie. She and her husband are both Jehovah Witness, but we have already had many wonderful conversations with her husband. I think relationally we will have many opportunities with all sorts of people. We have also met many of the teachers at the Trust School as well as many Bible college people. The Zambians are warm and hospitable. They really make you feel welcome.

Cooking has not been as difficult as I thought. The grocery stores are a lot smaller but I have been able to find most of what I need. Surprisingly, groceries are real expensive. I think they are a least 25% more expensive than at home. There are 3 restaurants (that we would feel safe eating at) in Kitwe. We went to one on Sunday night. It was called Wimby’s. Wimby’s is a South African chain, somewhat like a Steak and Shake. The children were super excited about this option.

The pictures that are enclosed are of some of the children in our little community and the children on their way to school this morning. The building behind them is our house.

Thank you again for your prayers. I can feel them, really. I think so much of the strength I am feeling is from the prayers you all are lifting up on our behalf.

Much love,

Shelley
